Raul Seixas and Paulo Coelho met in 1971 in Rio de Janeiro. Raul read about flying saucers in the 2001 Magazine, that Paulo Coelho directed. Enchanted with the article, Raul invited Paulo to dinner in his apartment. He showed unpublished music to Paulo and asked him to write lyrics for some of them. From that moment on, a great musical partnership of these two myths of Brazilian popular music started.
They began the work of preparation for Raul's first solo album, entitled Krig-a-Bandolo, which was released in July of 1973.
Paulo was always fascinated by the spiritual search, and invited his friend Raul to learn about the secret society, that the writer was part of, known as Astrum Argentum (AA). It was a mystic-philosophical organization based on the English magician Aleister Crowley’s teachings. Crowley’s work consisted of the practice of extracted rituals from books of magic and revelations of secrets sects.
The work developed by the partnership of Paulo and Raul had a strong influence from Crowley, so much so, that some music consisted of adapted texts of the English magician, such as the great success Alternative Society.
The disk with the song "Gita "which was inspired by The Bhagavad-Gita, (sacred writing of India), was released in 1974 and sold 600 million copies. This was Raul Seixas first golden record.
As the popularity of this musical duet grew, Paulo and Raul started to believe in the materialization of the Alternative Society. The headquarters of the sect would be in the star’s city in Minas Gerais, But their dream, which was intended to bring good news to the world through the Alternative Society, ended in May of 1974 when the police apprehended most of the copies of the comic books considered subversive material by the military dictatorship. Paulo and Raul were arrested and tortured. Material of the Alternative Society was thrown away, by the writer, in a trash can in Leblon, thus eliminating any temptation of publishing it.
On August 21, 1989, Raul Seixas died in his apartment in São Paulo, but his work continues eternalized in our hearts.
Paulo Coelho also wrote lyrics for other talented voices of MPB (Brazilian Popular music), like Elis Regina (Me Vuelves Loco - You Drive Me crazy) and Rita Lee (Arrombou a Festa I and II and Esse Tal de Rock And Roll), but it was the compositions in partnership with Raul Seixas such as "Gita", "I was born ten thousand years ago" and "Al Capone" that made him famous as one of the best lyric writers of Brazilian Popular Music.
